30 MINUTES https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/12/30-minutes I've discovered over my time as a street photographer that wandering around is not always a great way to get a shot.

Sometimes you have to be patient and wait for the shot to come to you.

That being said, I've added a new menu to my site called '30 minutes' which reflects this very idea.

Principally my goal is to find a place that has great natural light and just wait for a period of 30 minutes to see what happens and attempt to capture some interesting shots.

The first of these efforts entitled 'Summer's Lane - Hamilton' is the result of this idea.

Please use the menu above or copy and paste the link below to your browser to see this gallery

The Friend I Never Met https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/12/the-friend-i-never-met Scott Weiland (October 27, 1967 - December 3, 2015)

On Thursday December 3rd, 2015 I lost a friend...a friend I never met.  His name was Scott Weiland.

Scott was the lead singer for a band I literally worshipped in the 90's and into the new millennium; Stone Temple Pilots

Their music really defined an era and my life growing up.  Growing up in our teenage years we all have something or someone we can turn to when times are tough.  In a world this troubled there are things that can make us smile and feel good regardless of whatever troubles we may have.  Scott's music was one of those things for me.

I was hit with the news early Thursday morning December 3rd and, like most I assume, was in a state of disbelief.  I didn't want to believe it but knowing Scott's troubles with drug addiction over the years you knew that the day would come.  I didn't want it to come because that meant that part of me was dying also and losing something that had provided so much joy for over 20 years.

Even though we never met face to face Scott I consider you a friend.

Thank you Scott for being a part of my life and all the happiness you've brought into it.

Even though you're gone your music lives on forever.

RIP my friend.

Black & White Spider Awards 2015 - Nominations https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/11/black-white-spider-awards-2015---nominations

This past February I submitted several photos to the Black & White Spider Awards.

Celebrating its 10th year, Black & White Spider Awards is the leading international award honoring black & white photography. A global platform and channel for photographers to show their work to important key industry taste-makers.

Winners and nominees are recognized in a night of online gala celebrations when photography fans around the globe log on for the climax of the annual Photoshow and pay tribute to the most outstanding achievements in black & white photography.

This past Saturday November 21st, the judges announced the nominees and winners across 15 categories for both professional and amateur work.  I had submitted my works into the 'people' and 'wildlife' categories and much to my surprise and happiness I was nominated for 5 of photos across both categories.  It was really amazing to be recognized even though I did not win.  There are a lot of fantastic images that the jury had to choose from so it was gratifying just to be recognized alongside my peers.

It was a fun experience and definitely something I will do again.

You can look at my work thru the links below to the spider awards website.  Just highlight each link, copy and paste into your web browser.

Each artist is shown in alphabetical order so you'll have to scroll down to see my work.

Photo Exhibition - Shades of Grey https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/10/photo-exhibition---shades-of-grey

This fall I was privileged enough to be selected as one of the 50 finalists for the City of Hamilton's 'Shades of Grey' black and white photography exhibition.  There was a city wide call for submissions and one of my 'Destination Unknown' images was selected from about 300 submitted photos.

It was exciting to be selected and noticed for my work and thanks to the jurors who participated and nominated me!

The show is at the Fieldcote Museum in Ancaster Ontario just off of Sulphur Springs Road and runs until October 24th 2015.

Cold, cold and more cold https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/2/cold-cold-and-more-cold After the brutal winter of 2013-14 I honestly never gave serious consideration to vacation and holidays but it's something that's becoming more apparent that I need to do as the winter of 2014-15 is dragging on and on with no apparent respite in site.  After experiencing car troubles this winter I have come to respect people who do not have vehicles and live there lives by taking public transit.  I can remember when I used to take the bus as a child with my mum and it costing about 45 cents to take the bus...now it's somewhere north of 2 bucks.  I have been working on several photos that I had taken this past summer in Toronto of people who use the numerous street cars for means of transport and it's interesting to see the facial features and emotions these traveller's have.  My 'Destination Unknown' portfolio aims to show these emotions and translate them into some form of art.  Please take the time to check out these photos as I'm quite happy with them and will be considering printing some for a possible exhibition down the road.  I hope you're all safe and warm and 'surviving' our latest deep freeze.  So much for global warming :)

Photo Exhibition - Chance Encounters https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/1/photo-exhibition---chance-encounters As I stated in my first blog post I'm hoping that 2015 is a year of firsts.

With that said my first photo exhibition is being held in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario Canada at a local artist's run studio called Centre 3 for Print and Media Arts.  The show runs from January 9th thru until January 31st 2015.

Below are a couple of web-links that have more information.  Come on down and have a look!

2015 - It starts here. https://www.ukjay.ca/blog/2015/1/it-starts-here Well I've finally done it...I've jumped into the world of web pages.  Seems hard to believe really.  It doesn't seem that long ago that I was going to my first 'film' photography class down at the DVSA (Dundas Valley School of Art)...but that was nearly 7 years ago.  I've been toying with the idea of my own web page for some time but my procrastination has prevented me from doing so until recently.

I'm hoping 2015 brings a lot of firsts and positive energy my way as the past several years have led me to live a very 'routine' type lifestyle.  I want to branch out...see the world...take lots of pictures and experience true happiness.

I have some people to thank for their support and guidance as I continue to grow as a photographer and artist.

Mum and dad...I love you now and always.  Words can't express how thankful I am to you both for everything you've done over the years.  I'm lucky to be your child.

My mentor Peter Karuna who taught me how to see the world in a way I never knew.  Thank you.

My fellow photographers and friends from the DVSA (Stewart, Terrance and Neil).  You're work is an inspiration.

2015....it starts here.
